Hello there!  Welcome to the Water Blog!

How would you like to learn about what it’s like
to live on a boat on the water?

Does that sound like fun?  Then this blog is for you!

Let’s start by meeting our boat.  Here's a picture:

Our boat has a name:  Midnight Sun.

Here’s a picture of our boat being carried to the water.

Can you see the name?

We decided to call our boat Midnight Sun because up in Alaska, where we work during the summer, the sun stays up until the middle of the night!

If you had a boat that was all yours, what would you name it?

Here’s another picture of the outside of our boat.

Our boat is a sailboat.

It has a tall mast that reaches very high into the sky for holding the sails.

In this picture, the sail at the front of the boat, which is called the headsail, is rolled up.

Here’s a picture of a boat named Why Knot that sailed with us one day.  See how the headsail is rolled out?  It’s pretty big, isn’t it?

The wind pushes on the sail and makes the boat go through the water.

Do you have a piece of paper, or a paper napkin nearby?  If you hold it up and blow on it, see how it moves?  That’s how the wind blows on the sail, and pushes a sailboat through the water!

Are you curious about what the inside of our boat looks like?

That’s where we sleep and eat and read books and sing songs.  I’ll show you some pictures of the inside the next time I write.  I'll also introduce you to our crew.  Did you see their pictures on the side of the screen?  They will help explain different spaces inside the boat.

Thank you for visiting Water Blog!  I’d love to hear about the name of your boat.  Could you draw a picture?

We look forward to your next visit!
